What Are Blood Diamonds?
Blood diamonds are also known as conflict diamonds. In both cases the references are to diamonds mined under oppressive regimes by rebel movements to finance wars, acts of terror which most often results in great human suffering often including children.
What is being done to stop the traffic of blood diamonds?
There are several initiatives and movements each trying to gain international status. The Kimberley process is one such initiative that is gaining real momentum, as a result of a meeting between diamond producing states held in Kimberley, South Africa in May 2000.
Today the Kimberley process imposes stringent requirements to guarantee the conflict free status of diamonds that have been mined and exported from mines that conform.
